Prop Me Up!

Consider using props in your next portrait session.

What could you bring along that would enhance your photos without overtaking them?
Are you a surfer?
How about taking photos with your surfboard?

This couple brought their surfboards along!

 Golfer? Beach Volleyball player?

Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal?
This young lady was always called Lilo growing up and she loves the movie "Lilo and Stitch". For her graduation photos she brought "Stitch" along.

Want to use fun signs?
Here are some that our creative customers brought with them!

These props tell the story. The photos can be used for engagement announcements or "save the date" cards.

This is a famous jumping rock at Waimea Bay on the North Shore! We loved their signs!!

And of course we are taking pictures on location in Hawaii so how about some flowers in the hair or wearing leis?

Between the incredible scenery and your giant smile there is no mistaking your pictures were taken in Hawaii. Add a floral or kukui nut lei and the image becomes iconic!

In Hawaii, a wahine (girl), will wear a single flower over her ear. Interestingly, wearing one over the right ear signifies you are single and over the left ear means you are "taken".

Well these boys are just having WAY too much fun with their props!!!

Even little touches like a hat can help to tell your story.

You get the idea-- now run with it!

Here are some more of our favorite uses of props.............

Simple prop but simply perfect!!!

The Beauty of Black and White Photos

The Beauty of Black and White Photos

For decades now color photos have dominated the photography landscape, with good reason of course. Here in Hawaii we are so lucky to have amazing colors all around us. The local phrase is " Lucky we live Hawaii, Ya?" and its true "fo sure brah" ( translated: for sure it is most definitely right). So why would you ever want to have your photos black and white?? The reason is that Black and White photos are 1) Powerful 2) Beautiful and 3) TIMELESS. Yes, that is right B+W photos are absolutely timeless. Think of that 90's wedding with peach, teal, pink or powder blue bridesmaid dresses and matching groomsmen bowties or cumberbunds? If the photo was in B+W you may not have guessed the era they were taken in so quickly would you? Yep, color can be distracting and make it hard to focus on the subject. Black and White photos are more classic and dramatic.

This applies to the background setting and mood for your photos too. Black and White photos as opposed to color work even on gloomy overcast days. OK, we know you are thinking, come on they shoot on location in Hawaii, they never have a BAD photo day right? Well, we do have a few cloudy days, although an entire day that is completely overcast and rainy is rare here, it can happen. But guess what, the lower light and contrast works amazing for black and white photos and no one looking at your photos would ever guess it was hazy or drizzling!!!
Since in a B+W photo you aren't using color to lead the eye around the photo this means that textures, lines, shapes and tones become the elements that the viewer will focus on. Shadows and highlights pop and you will notice so much more than you may have if the shot was in full color!

Black and White portraits are amazing. The focus becomes solely on you!! And that's what its all about- YOU!  Look at this comparison of this picture of a beautiful bride in color, which is a stunning image in full color. Now look at the classic, dramatic look of the same image in Black and White! See???

As our technicians adjust the images from your proofs they may choose some photos to highlight in black and white. Of course you will still have the color option too but consider those Black and White images that they may add to your proofs and you may see your photos in a whole new light,.. a dramatic light or... shall we say- well, "its right there in black and white"!!!
